Want to avoid costly plumbing problems? Try these Plumbing Tips
In a plumbing emergency, know where the stop valve is located. Los Angeles experiences dozens of earthquakes a year, some of which can wreak havoc on your plumbing system. When one hits, your stop valve can be the difference between a mild inconvenience and a serious plumbing problem. Kitchen sink stop valves are usually located under the sink. Bathroom sink stop valves are usually found under the sink as well. Toilet shut off valves are located under the toilet tank, on the right. If you need to shut off ALL water flow, your main shut off valve is usually located near your water softener, close to the water main. It should be a large valve, made of metal, with a robust handle.
Don’t pour fats or oils down the garbage disposal. Same goes for bones, egg shells, and coffee grounds. A good rule of thumb is to never put anything in your garbage disposal you wouldn’t eat. Also, use cold water when running it. Bonus Tip - Pour ice cubes down your disposal every now and again. Ice cubes are good for reducing grease build up and sharpening the disposal blades.
Check for Toilet Leaks. Remove the top of the tank and flush the toilet. Then, put in a few drops of food coloring in the water. Wait 20 minutes, then see if the water in the reservoir changes color. If it does, then you have a leak, requiring the flapper valve to be changed.
