If your air conditioner shows signs of age or excessive wear and tear, it may be time to replace it. As summer approaches, be on the lookout for these common air conditioner problems.
Higher Utility Bills. Higher electric bills are usually a sign that your air conditioner has lost efficiency. Low refrigerant levels, dirty filters, restricted air flow - all these can cause your air conditioner to work harder to produce the same amount of comfort. The result is higher utility bills and greater wear and tear on your unit.
Refrigerant Leaks. If your air conditioner is low on refrigerant, you may have a leak. Or it may have been undercharged at the time it was installed. Whatever the cause, low refrigerant levels can cause your a/c not to work properly. Surprisingly, a sign that you have low refrigerant is frost on the air conditioner coils.
Dirty Filters. Clogged or dirty air filters can reduce your energy efficiency by 5%-15%, so make sure you clean them every six months or so. Not only is this good for your unit’s efficiency, but it helps improve your home’s air quality. Depending on your air conditioner make and model, some filters need to be replaced while others are reusable.
